Minimally inhaled sedation is also known as “laughing gas”. This colorless, odorless gas creates feelings of happiness and euphoria when it is inhaled and helps minimize anxiety and fear. Kids sedated with nitrous oxide will feel safe and comfortable, and may even giggle or laugh. Laughing gas is the lowest form of "sedation" - in reality it is not sedation at all, it only calms and lessens a child's anxiety when used. It will not make a child sleepy or put them to sleep.
Laughing gas is administered through a comfortable, flavored nose mask. Dr. Nasem only administers 50% laughing gas mixed with 50% oxygen. The gas will take effect immediately and Dr. Nasem will monitor the levels throughout your child’s treatment. Once treatment is over, 100% oxygen is administered and the effects of laughing gas take only about 5 minutes to wear off. This means that your child can go back to their regular daily routine after their appointment without any side effects!
For a child with more anxiety in a dental setting, IV sedation or general anesthesia may be the answer to provide safe and effective treatment. Dr. Nasem offers an array of options for this level of sedation.
Dr. Nasem offers in office IV sedation. With this option, Dr. Nasem brings in a highly trained anesthesiologist to sedate and monitor your child in office, while she is able to focus solely on providing the highest level of dentistry to your child.
For other children, she is credentialed at La Veta Surgical Center who is contracted with Kaiser Permanente to offer dental sedation for those with Kaiser Permanente Insurance. La Veta Surgical Center enables Dr. Nasem to provide care for children in a surgical center atmosphere, much like a hospital.
Dr. Nasem has also been credentialed at Children's Hospital Orange County (CHOC) for over 10 years. Being credentialed at this state of the art children's hospital enables Dr. Nasem to treat children with any medical needs or special needs in a safe, operating room setting.
Sedation dentistry can be completely safe for kids of all ages. Not all levels or options of sedation are right for every child. When deciding if sedation is right for your child, Dr. Nasem will go over the risks, benefits and alternatives for each procedure. Dr. Nasem is skilled and experienced when it comes to providing sedation dentistry for children and will gladly walk you through the process and answer any questions you may have.
Dr. Nasem, and often a dedicated anesthesiologist, will be carefully monitoring your child every step of the way. We will use the proper dose of medication based on your child’s weight and age, and discuss any risks or potential health issues that may interfere with sedation before your child’s appointment. You can trust Dr. Nasem to keep your child safe throughout their entire appointment.
When delivered properly, the side effects for sedation are minimal. Some side effects may include slight headache, confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, or nausea, but these will quickly subside after your child's visit.
